Are you thinking of entering the real estate industry? It is a smart move. As a successful real estate agent, you can control your work schedule, generate an excellent income and get involved in the exciting developments that are always happening in the property industry. As for how to become a real estate agent, it only takes five simple steps. Note that these steps are simple, but not necessarily easy. They will require a great deal of hard work on your part. However, just take them one step at a time, and you can be a licensed real estate agent in just a few weeks.
Understand the Utah state requirements
Your first step is to do a little research as to what is required to practice as a real estate agent in the state of Utah. The pre-qualification requirements are as follows:
- You must be of legal age (18 years and older)
- You must be educated to high school level (i.e., you must have a high school diploma or GED).
- You will need to complete 120 hours of education at an accredited real estate school.
- You must then pass the Sales Agent exam.
- Once you pass the exam, you will have 90 days in which to apply for your license.
Complete your pre-licensing coursework
Assuming that you are 18 or older and you have your high school diploma or equivalent, your next step is to enroll in a pre-licensing real estate course. The Institute of Real Estate Education offers the Sales Agent Pre-License Course, which provides you with all you need to pass the exam. The course takes 120 hours and involves the principles of real estate under state and federal law.
Pass your state licensing exam
Once you have completed your coursework, you will need to sit the exam. The course will help you prepare for the exam, and it is always advisable to take the exam as soon as possible after you have completed the course. Once you pass the exam, you will have 90 days in which to apply for your license. Once you have completed the application, you should receive your license within four to six weeks.
Join professional real estate organizations
After becoming a licensed agent, it is a good idea to join one or two local real estate organizations. These will include a Multiple Listing Service (MLS) at the state level, and the National Association of Realtors at the federal level. These provide valuable networking tools and professional resources. You can attend national conferences, network with other realtors, and gain important insights into your industry and the direction it is taking.
Complete necessary real estate post-licensing coursework
Your education does not have to stop once you have completed the pre-licensing exam. There are several courses you can take to improve your knowledge after you are licensed.
